How We Rank
We rank Texas electricity plans the same way you would if you had time to do the math yourself.
What we compare
For every plan available in your ZIP code, we calculate the estimated total monthly bill at your usage. That estimate includes four numbers.
Energy charge. The cents per kWh the provider charges for the electricity itself.
Base charge. A fixed monthly fee regardless of usage. Some plans have this, some do not.
TDU delivery charge. What your local utility (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP, or TNMP) charges to deliver power to your home. Same for every plan in your ZIP.
Usage-based credits. Some plans give you a bill credit at certain usage tiers, usually around 1,000 kWh. We apply the credit to your specific usage.
Add those four together at your monthly kWh, and you get the real estimated total. That is the number we sort by.
What we do not do
We do not rank by the advertised rate. The advertised rate only applies at one specific usage level. At your actual usage, the math often comes out differently.
We do not rank by which provider pays us the highest commission. Some providers pay $50 per enrollment, some pay $150. Our ranking does not change based on that.
We do not show plans that are not available in your ZIP code.
We do not promise you will save a specific dollar amount. Your actual bill depends on real usage, weather, and the rate you lock in.
What we cannot do
We update plan data daily from PowerToChoose.org, Texas’s official plan database. The numbers we show are accurate as of our last scrape. Plan rates and availability can change between updates. Verify the plan terms on the provider’s Electricity Facts Label before you enroll.
How to use the ranking
Enter your ZIP code and your typical monthly kWh. The plans appear ranked from lowest estimated bill to highest, with the math behind each estimate visible on the card. Click into any plan to see the full breakdown.
The closer your monthly kWh estimate is to your real usage, the sharper the ranking is. Check your last few electric bills if you are not sure.
